Wonder Woman #759

WONDER WOMAN #759
August 1st, 2020

This is a character i've loved since the 80's run by the great George Perez. But sadly the book never seems to work for me. If it gets a good writer it has a bad artist and if it has a good artist the writing tends to be as dull as dish water and i can never stay interested.

Bought this issue purely on the basis of a one page ad in another book (Great effort on the non Batman related books as always DC) just because i liked the artwork and it confirmed a new team was taking over. I'm totally unfamiliar with both Tamaki and Janin but i have to say i was impressed with this issue.

The story flowed well and this felt like a great pont to jump onto the series. Diana is obviously starting a new phase of her life and we're seeing her making new friends and buying furniture in between averting disaster. I always enjoy a nice character driven issue and this certainly delivered on that. I instantly beleived the voice that Tamaki's script has given to Diana and her interactions between both her neighbour and her neighbours bunny were perfect. While the artwork was very well polished and the action sequences were well delivered.

One pet peeve is the modern version of maxwell Lord as a villain. As a fan of the old Justice League International series i struggle to reconcile that character with this one. But i cant blame Tamaki for this as his new character has been established for a long time.

Hopefully this issue has set a standard and we're in for a good run with this team.

Really Liked It

Have you not read any Greg Rucka's WW work? I thought Greg Ruckas work was amazing stuff.

Actually i did. And you've just pointed me to a bunch of stuff i had forgot to add from my collection. They were good but i didn't stick around for the whole run. Two things bothered me about the early issues. The split story format with different months alternating between her origin story and then a story set in current continuity. I don't know if the whole team changed between those issue but i certainly hated the artwork on the current continuity one. Secondly every time DC has a reboot/shakeup. Wonder Woman seems to be on a list of characters who has to rebooted with a new or at least revised origin story.

Yes. It was weird for me. I loved Sharps art but hated the story. Hated Scott's art but preferred that story. Didnt want to continue with a book that i only half wanted every other month.

Ha ha. Got ya. I loved it all. In fact I think I prefer Scott over Sharp's art. But I really loved both stories. I guess I loved how we got 2 stories.

I loved Rucka's run but this felt more like the Perez stuff which what I've read is incredible.

It did didnt it? I think its the way Diana spoke and interacted with people that had that feel to it.

I don't know how to explain it but Wonder Woman is a crazy ride with over the top mythology ties but for me the charm of the Perez run is Diana felt like a normal grounded person.  This felt like that, Rucka's run as much as I love it was epic and didn't have that same feel.
