Hawkman #22
Hawkman #22 Review
March 12th, 2020

Its obvious from my profile icon that Hawkman is a favourite of mine. But setting that aside this is such a good book month after month. If you dont read it then its honestly the best book you dont read. The last couple of issues has had a new artist in Fernando Pasarin. I'm not familiar with their body of work but i've been so impressed with what i've seen. The tale Venditti continues to tell is a wide sweeping epic of a hero out for redemption as he reincarnates across time and space. There's always action, there's always story and Pasarin's artwork really looks like it will compliment it in the same way Bryan Hitch did across the first 12 issues. I've not enjoyed the infected heroes storylines running across some DC titles lately but here its actually been handled as an asset to the overall story. Cant recommend this book enough.

I dropped this at 18,the infected stuff just got in the way of a good story sadly.

Indeed. Even I lost a little enthusiasm for it during some of those issues. But its honestly worth another look. If only for the new artwork.

I may go back and get the issues but I am trying to cutback on the floppies and there's a few thing down the road that I want to get on board with.

Yes. Its become an expensive hobby. Have to be more and more selective.

I completely agree with you. This is one of my favourite comics going right now. Even the thrown in Infected storyline wasn't terrible in my opinion; even if they were weaker issues overall.

@Rjepic1 it wasn't bad in the traditional sense, it just took me out of the story, the first 12 were awesome in my opinion, at which point I was looking forward to hawkman adventuring around, but the year of the villain just felt forced.

@ObsessedNerd sadly yes, I am trying to reduce a few but there is a lot I am interested in that will have to trade wait.

How are the earlier issues of this run? I hear a lot of good about this, so I might investigate the trade, if it has one.

The 1st 12 issues are so good. One of the things that puts a lot of people off of Hawkman is the confusing history. There have been so many versions of the character due to DC being trigger happy on the reboots. But the 1st 12 issues of this series turn that into an asset. The fact that he is reincarnated so many times becomes part of the story while at the same time making it so that you don't need to know anything about the previous series or history to enjoy the story. Also the artwork is just superb. I cant recommend it enough.

That sounds fantastic. I love it when writers play into a character's strange history instead of ignoring what doesn't fit.

That's something that appealed to me in Wonder Woman Rebirth as well!

Nice one! Your review convinced me to pick this title up again. This is a great issue. I also loved the first 12 issues but thought it lost its way a bit after that. Hawkman is a character I've never been interested in before now, but Vendetti's version was so much fun right from issue 1. I also loved Brian Hitch's art before he left the title. The art in this issue is really good, too.

It was to be on the chopping block for the next month with the infected storyline being a bit too much on the boring side...like nothing progressed during 4-5 issues. Now, this one convinced me to keep going and has a nice, real Hawkman story in the making

Yes. I think the infected storyline has been very badly managed by DC. A lot of people seem to have been turned off by it and it kind of illustrates how out of touch DC have gotten with areas of their customer base. If it was just part of a self contained series it might have worked. But its like something that has spilled out of control and is intermingling with Year of the villain and Leviathan effect spin offs. Enough is enough.
