Supergirl #39
Supergirl #39 Review
February 15th, 2020

I came back to Supergirl at issues 21. I enjoyed the storyline by Marc Andreyko and artwork by Kevin Maguire who is a favourite of mine. It was a fun story of kara and Krypto going off into space and investigating circumstances around the destruction of Krypton.

Then DC started in on this infected heroes garbage. DC seem to be demonstrating how little they understand about a lot of their characters, especially the female ones, and what people enjoy about them. They're not challenging their readers as they think they are they're just making us sigh at the cliche.

Supergirl is apparently ending in the next few issues. No doubt she'll recover from what the boring and overused Batman who laughs has done to her and become Supergirl again just as the series ends. Then DC will eventually give us a new issue 1 where they will no doubt reboot Kara from scratch with her arrival on earth and learning who she is and where she fits and not quite being like Superman etc etc etc.

Its something they do with Supergirl over and over again.

These last few issues have not been wel written and it just feels like the series is in a holding pattern waiting to end.

    So, 0 for 2 this week? That's a bummer. :(

Do you have a favorite run of Supergirl?

I do. My favourite was the Peter David written series that started in the late 90's. But its a book I pick up off and on all the time as ive always liked the character.

What’s your opinion of everything leading up to the infected? I was planning on getting this run in trade.

I only got back into this series in the last couple of years. But i'd absolutely recommend what ive read up to this infected storyline. As KingKrypton says, the adventure she had in space was excellent. One of the things I liked were little touches of Krypto's involvement. Little details like the carnage a happy super powered dog would cause if he wagged his tail. Silly stuff but the kind of detail that adds a lot to the storyline.

sounds great. Thanks. I switched to trades after issue 30 I think. Due to lack of funds, I am trying to read some stuff on my shelf, but there is a sale on Monday, so might pick up SG vol. 2 then.

Series ends at issue 42 so maybe they’ll relaunch it.

I thought the trip in space was also the best part of this Supergirl series. I dropped the series when the infected arc began. That was the first time I dropped Supergirl since the Peter David era. I was going to pick it back up at issue #41 but now that may be off.

My favorite run of Supergirl is the Silver Age when she was the backup feature in Action.

Yes I love the old stuff as well. Always try to pick up those appearances if I can get them.

A great mini series is Supergirl : Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade.

I've heard that's a really good one too. Same for the Tamaki miniseries with art by Joelle Jones. I am a Supergirl novice (her many versions don't help!) so I've been looking into recommended starting places lately.

Supergirl Being Super is great probably the best SG I've read.  The first two volumes of new 52 Supergirl were very good.
