Probably the best origins story for Zod, considering the other examples have been retconned, multiversed, etc etc...

That being said, the reasons as to why Zod makes the choices he does, other than Krypton needing an enemy, and him being the one to lead them against it, are flimsy. I feel like all you need to know about his motivations are in that last sentence, honestly. Still, his warmongering coupled with his deviousness is quite compelling, and the added layer of his personal philosophy of being the monster is almost a self-confession of "I will be the bad guy, because villains make you stronger." I'm sure there's a philosophical rabbit hole there, so consdiering everything else, it's a good one. Probably one of the Villains month issues I remember the best.
