Covid, comics, and life in general
August 7, 2020, 1:37 pm

So, it seems I am one of the lucky ones with all that is currently going on.  I still have a job, I haven't caught Covid (knowinly at least), my family are all healthy, and comic books have returned (well somewhat).

I was deemed "Essental" way back when everything started, so no shutdown or time off for myself.  My wife's job was the same, so we have been working the entire time.  Which, doesn't seem to fit the norm (at least in my experience).

Not having new comics to read was just as bad if not worse for me than no sports, everything shutting down, lack of toilet paper, trouble finding basic supplies, and everything else we all have experienced in this new normal.

But, not having new comics?  That was really tough.  There were a lot of plotlines that were in the middle of being told and some were nearing the end.  That hurt.  Having to wait so long to find out what happened next killed me.  Wednesday's felt off to me during this time too.  Normally a day I looked forward to just felt like a normal day.  The magic had disappeared and I feered it may not return.  How was an already struggling industry going to handle time off?  Not to mention the issues that surfaced when Diamond started dictating how and when comics would be shipped?  This added to the stress of all the new normals that we have all had to deal with.

Finally word started to come out that yes indeed comics would return.  First in all digital form, and eventually in physical form.  I often wondered which series would continue, which wouldn't?  Would this give publishers a chance to really look at what was selling and alter what was produced?  Would the shutdown cause series to get cancelled so they could try and recoop money?  How is all of this going to effect the most important part, LCS?  I can't imagine the devistation most owners had when they got the news.  No new comics?  We have to shutdown our store for how long?  That had to be a difficult pill to swallow.

Luckily, it seems that comics have made their triumphant return and we can all rejoice.  It is odd to have something like Empyre out every week because Marvel is playing catchup with their release times.  At the same time it is nice to be able to read a crossover in a fast time.  Less to try and remember.

I hope that the publishers come together and find another way to ship other than Diamond, or at least on alternative.  It's not a good idea to rely on one thing for any reason, let alone distribution.

The next year or so is going to be interesting.  Will a viable vaccine become available?  How will sports all play out? When can life get back to what normal used to be like? Most important, how will all this effect the comic industry?  Will there be a push to switch to TBP?  Will they try to go all digital?  Will Covid force too many LCS out of business forcing publishers to do something else?

I hope everyone of you that takes the time to read this has been as lucky as we have.  I hope you are healthy, have a job, been able to navigate through the "new normal", doing what you can to keep yourself and others safe. We will make it through this stronger and wiser together!

I know there are some that don't look at working as a blessing in our current times, I do. If you are anything like me, sitting at home for months would drive me insane!

Glad to hear you are still working, even if you had to switch jobs.  How do you like the new job compared to the old job?

Sitting a home would and was driving me nuts. I was just doing my photography work and stopped working my other full time job in 2017. So I was just "under employmed" for a few years. Now I am working at a Pre-K Montessori School. I really enjoy the kids. We have a very small (47) students in the whole school. So we have very small class sizes. I love it compared to my last full time job.... Which was maybe the worst job I ever had. Ha ha. Glad to see you are doing well.

I wish her the best of luck going back to work. We have a few teachers in our family and they are all very nervous about going back. A couple of them are elementary school teachers, which I would be nervous as well.

I've made the jump to pretty much all digital comics these days. No real reason other than lack of storage for the most part. Plus it is nice to be able to read while on breaks and lunch at work.

Did you pick up any major comics for your collection?

Take care of each other and I hope everything works out great for you both!
