The Amazing Spider-Man #1
Something fresh, something familiar

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Slott’s 10 year run on Spider-Man...as in, I LOVED most of his major story arcs with Spidey, but felt like his smaller stories floundered & I struggled to be invested for the past couple of years...I didn’t mind a successful Pete, but found that his tech & lackluster foes kept me at arms length from truly loving one of my favorite heroes. At the end of the day, I was sad to see Slott go & hesitant to see where Nick Spencer would pick up & what newness/familiarity he would reinvest into the character...my concerns were put to rest with this issue... Spencer writes Spidey/Peter as he should: plagued with woes, doubtful of self, vulnerable, yet with an unyielding sense of hope, sacrifice (heroism) and humor. He understands Spider-Man. And my hopes are high (but not set on) a Peter/MJ comeback relationship in the coming years. If I had one (minor) critique it would be: Ottley’s art just doesn’t do it for me...It is by no means bad - the man’s got some major talent...it just didn’t quite jive right with the story in my opinion...I much preferred Immonen. It wasn’t distractingly off-putting though (maybe I just need to acquire the right taste), so my score remains a solid 5 stars.
Loved It
