James Bond #1
Bond is back?
James Bond #1 Review
November 7th, 2015
Let me start out by saying: I thought that Ellis writing Bond would be one of the best things I've read in a while. I will admit that I expect a lot from Warren Ellis, but I have to say after this one issue, I'm not as sold on the comic as I was on the concept. One of the big selling points of this book, for me, was that the Bond of the movies was gone and we'd see more of the "rougher, meaner Bond" from Fleming's novels. I'm not sure this came across. The opening chase scene feels straight out of a Bond film. If this is trying to distance the comic from the movies, I have to question this choice. Also, when we get dialog from Bond, to me it comes across as more Sterling Archer and less "rougher, meaner" Bond. This isn't to say I didn't enjoy the book, there were some interesting moments, and I enjoyed most of the art. But after the next book, I will probably re-evaluate if this keeps a spot on my pull list. I'm interested to see how the series develops, but this first issue, in my opinion, did not live up to expectations.
