Spirits of Ghost Rider: Mother of Demons #1
April 3rd, 2020

Spirits of Ghost Rider: Mother of Demons is a one-shot connected to Ed Brisson's current Ghost Rider run. Within it are 3 stories: Lilith's history up to recent events, Johnny Blaze's experience as King of Hell, and Danny Ketch immediately following the events of Ghost Rider #4. Despite my generally negative disposition towards interludes, side stories, and multi-chapter single issues, this was actually pretty good.

It wasn't until reading Ghost Rider #5 and feeling like I missed something that I even entertained the thought of giving this book a try. Sure enough, it largely contained the information I was looking for. Is it necessary to understand Ghost Rider #5? No, but it certainly helps give context, as Brisson gives dedicated readers some insight to what's been happening in the background of his story so far. While he's joined on the main series by artists Aaron Kuder and Juan Frigeri, this issue has Roland Boschi on art. Although it isn't consistent, it definitely has its moments and looks good when it counts.

Unfortunately, this book doesn't have much appeal to anyone not currently reading Ghost Rider. While it fills in some small gaps from the main series, it doesn't do quite enough to catch someone up on what happened in the first four issues. If you're invested in reading Brisson's Ghost Rider beyond #4, if #5 has already left you a little confused, or if you just want some more Ghost Rider, this book is worth getting. It won't blow your mind, but it is informative and blends in well with the main series.
