Usually when something contemporary like crowd funding is placed in a comic, it feels like it's pandering to an audience as well as dates the story. This may feel dated later, but the crowd funding storyline feels natural...

Gotta agree. Normally something like that would be too cringey for me, but like you said it feels natural and so far it works. I hope this Mr Minth isn't a one-and-done villain.
