There was a series before this called Power of the Dark Crystal that will answer all of your questions. It was excellent too, I highly recommend it. There are two volumes out already of reprints, there should be a third one soon.

This was even better than expected. I'm very pleased that we're getting a sequel to Power of the Dark Crystal, and so far it is living up to its predecessor. The artwork and use of color is just as great... -
