Daniel Smallwood lived with his grandparents, Tom and Gladys Smallwood. No mention of his parents is given. His grandfather operated a fishing trawler and discovered a strange object. Young Daniel was sure it was an egg; when Gladys broke it open, there was a tiny infant female in it. While she may have been physically different than most, Marrina, was welcomed into the Smallwood family and she and Dan grew very close. She matured at an accelerated rate.
She and Dan were close friends and when she displayed her superhuman powers, it was he who suggested she report herself to the Ministry of Defence. Unknown to most Dan felt a love for her more than that of a boy for his childhood friend, but Marrina married another, Namor.
