The amoral industrialist Norman Osborn was transformed by an experimental serum into the maniacal Green Goblin, and has endured over the decades as Spider-Man's most dreaded archenemy.

History
Norman Osborn was married to Emily Lynman with who he had their son Harry. After she seemingly died, Norman started to focus in his work not spending time with his son.
After betraying one of his partners in Oscorp and acquiring all the control in the company, Norman started working in a formula that his partner had left behind. It could give him superhuman powers, but during one of the experiments an explosion occurred. The chemicals he was working with made him go insane and after exiting the hospital, he decided to become the crime boss of New York.
The Green Goblin
With a disguise and some technology from his investigations, he became the Green Goblin. In order to gain the respect of his people, he decided to eliminate Spider-Man. During their first battle, the Green Goblin, woking along the Enforcers, draw their enemy to a trap in New Mexico during the filming of a movie. They were defeated and not even Hulk, who was around that area, could kill Spider-Man. But even after this failure, the Green Goblin was able to escape back to New York where he created his next plan.
He attacked Spider-Man by surprise during the first meeting of his fans club and although the Human Torch was around to help the arachnid, Spider-Man had to go leaving the Green Goblin with no reason to stay so he fled again. Using the reputation that making Spider-Man flee gave him, the Green Goblin tried to take over some criminal gangs by uncovering their leader to the press. Nonetheless, his plan failed when Spider-Man helped to arrest his new gang and forced the Goblin to leave after using all his weapons from him.
Once more, in an attemp to takeover all the gangs, he allied with the Crime Master in order to bring Spider-Man to the mob and end him once and for all. But again, the arachnid got away and defeated all his enemies from him. The Crime Master was gunned down and died before he could reveal the Goblin's identity. After all of these failures, Norman Osborn swears revenge.
Norman promised a reward to whoever got rid of Spider-Man and as the Green Goblin, he was able to spray him with a gas that deactivated his spider-sense from him. After this, he followed Spider-Man home and finally learned his true identity from him. The Green Goblin was able to trap Spider-Man and reavelead his own identity before the final showdown. During the fight, Norman is push to some chemicals and wires which produced him amnesia and erased the Goblin persona from his psyche.
The Amnesia
After this incident, he started to fix his relationship with his son, saved him from Kraven the Hunter and even helped Spider-Man to save Gwen and George Stacy. However, some time later, after passing in front of one of his old hideouts, the Green Goblin revive and had a fierce fight with Spider-Man, but after watching his son in a comma due to an overdossis, his persona dissapears once more.
But peace was short and little time after, the stress of his son drug problem made him want revenge on Peter Parker as the Green Goblin. He went to his appartment, but after only finding Gwen Stacy, he kidnapped her to the Brooklyn Bridge. During the battle with Spider-Man, Gwen fell and Spider-Man wasn't able to save him. In search of vengeance, he chased the Goblin to his hideout where in the end of their battle, Spider-Man decided to spare his life. Nonetheless, the Green Goblin wouldn't accept that ending and tried an attack with his glider which hit him apparently caussing his death.
