Kate Neville was one of Nick Fury's allies during the Deltite Affair, when S.H.I.E.L.D. was taken over by LMDs and Nick was branded a traitor. As a result, Kate was one of Nick's first recruits for the new S.H.I.E.L.D.

Because the Contessa believed Nick was a traitor for a time, their relationship ended and Nick also started a new relationship with Kate.
