Prince Dezan was the younger brother of Dorrek VII. Dezan was born with a "true-face" that, since its unusual smoothness resembled that of a Kree or a Human, was considered repulsive by other Skrulls. In his younger days, Dezan and his friends Myrn and Zabyk were inseparable as they spent years plotting ways to correct what they considered to be flaws in imperial society. Eventually, Dezan and Zabyk had a falling out just before Dezan's pacifism and "un-Skrull" activities were discovered and he was imprisoned. With his face hidden and his shape-shifting powers nullified by the Inhibitor Mask he was forced to wear, Dezan was exiled to the prison world of Klarr as a traitor to the Skrull Empire.
