After spending time in the military, James Gordon started his career as a beat cop in Chicago, where he worked for nearly 15 years before he was transferred to Gotham. It wasn’t long before he learned of the city’s bone-deep corruption, both in and outside of the police force, and to meet the masked man who had appointed himself Gotham’s protector.
At first, Gordon was wary of Batman, believing the masked vigilante was a far-from-optimal way to dispense justice. But as Gordon unraveled the tangled nest of mobs that comprised Gotham’s underworld, and discovered Police Commissioner Loeb had corrupted the GCPD, he realized Batman was his one true ally.
Together, Batman and Gordon exposed Loeb. Though his work initially made Gordon extremely unpopular with his fellow officers, he was promoted to captain, and eventually commissioner. Over time, he united the GCPD and Batman, championing the construction of the Bat-Signal in his crusade to clean up the city of Gotham. Gordon remains one of Batman’s closest friends and most trusted confidants outside the Bat-Family, and the most vital part of his job in fighting crime in Gotham City.
