Two days ago, DC made the big announcement that they were going to relaunch the DC Universe beginning with a historic renumbering of 52 superhero titles. Initially they only teased the first book helmed by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, but now they've unveiled the creative teams behind some of their biggest issue ones debuting in September.
Though Wonder Woman will play an integral role in Johns and Lee's Justice League #1, she'll also be making her appearance in a new ongoing series from writer Brian Azzarello (First Wave, Hellblazer, 100 Bullets) and artist Cliff Chiang (Green Arrow/Black Canary, Human Target). Chiang's cover for Wonder Woman #1 showcases the amazonian princess' brand new look.
Much in the way Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, The Flash) reinvigorated the Green Lantern series, he'll be reuniting with artist Ivan Reis (Green Lantern, Brightest Day) for a new take on the King of Atlantis in Aquaman #1. Joe Prado has teamed up with Reis to deliver a stunning cover you can see below.
Artist Francis Manapul (The Flash, Witchblade) will be making his writing debut with the upcoming The Flash #1 comic book. For the new ongoing series starring the DC Universe's speedster, he'll be working alongside Brian Buccellato (The Flash, Witchblade) for both the art and scripting. Apparently the character will be facing a brand new villain early on in the series that Manapul is excited to present to fans of the series.
Writers Ethan Van Sciver (Green Lantern, The Flash) and Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Secret Six) will take on The Fury of Firestorm #1 with artist Yildiray Cinar (Legion of SuperHeroes). The newest tale of the Nuclear Man begins with Jason Rusch and Ronnie Raymond - two high school students, worlds apart - and now they’re drawn into a conspiracy of super science that bonds them forever in a way they can’t explain or control. Check out Van Sciver's explosive artwork for the cover of the issue below.
Batman writer Tony Daniel (Batman, Teen Titans) and artist Philip Tan (Green Lantern, The Outsiders) are coming together to reinvigorate Carter Hall in The Savage Hawkman #1. "We're doing a book called 'Savage Hawkman' and to see the excitement between the artist and the writer taking a classic DC character, and to see what they're doing with it is so amazing," Bob Harras told CNN. Carter Hall’s skill at deciphering lost languages has led him to a job with an archeologist who specializes in alien ruins – but will the doctor’s latest discovery spread an alien plague through New York City? No matter the personal cost, Carter Hall must don his cowl and wings and become the new, savage Hawkman to survive.
Oliver Queen will also be a part of DC's relaunch in September. The character will don a new costume like many of his fellow superheroes in a title written by J.T. Krul (Fathom, Teen Titans) with art by Dan Jurgens (Booster Gold, Superman). Green Arrow #1's cover will be done by Brett Booth.
In Justice League International #1, a team of internationally-drafted superheroes fight each other and their bureaucratic supervisors as much as they do global crime. Dan Jurgens (Booster Gold, Superman) and artist Aaron Lopresti (Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman) team up for the first issue that features Booster Gold, Batman and many others.
Eric Wallace (Titans) and artist Roger Robinson (Azrael) will take on Mister Terrific #1 with cover artwork from J.G. Jones (Wanted, Final Crisis). The world’s third-smartest man – and one of its most eligible bachelors – uses his brains and fists against science gone mad.
Captain Atom has all the power in the world, but no hope of saving himself. Charged by nuclear energy, possessing vast molecular powers, he has the potential to be a god among men - a hero without limits. But the question is this: Will he lose himself in the process? J.T. Krul (Fathom, Teen Titans) and artist Freddie Williams II (Robin, The Flash) take the character in a bold new direction in Captain Atom #1. The cover to issue #1 is by Stanley Lau (The Web, Batgirl).
The DC Universe will also be sporting a new Anthology series with DC Universe Presents #1. In its first issue, Paul Jenkins (Hellblazer, The Sentry) and Bernard Chang (New Mutants, Wonder Woman) will be delivering a rich story featuring Deadman. The series will host new story arcs every few issues with characters from the DCU. Take a look at Ryan Sook (Hellboy, The Spectre)'s first cover for the series.
