Updated 2/14/2012: Michael Bay confirms the news via a press release on his personal website, "There has been a lot of speculation about what I'm going to do next and when or if I will do another 'Transformers. So let me set the record straight: I have just concluded a deal with Paramount to do two movies, but it won't be two 'Transformers.' I will first do 'Pain & Gain' with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Then I will do the next 'Transformers' for release on June 29, 2014."
After the commercial success of the Transformers film franchise, one could say that a fourth film was inevitable. Despite that, director Michael Bay was unsure if another was necessary. Would he be even be able to top Transformers: Dark of the Moon? So consider us surprised to hear that Bay is likely to return for a fourth, at least according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Speaking to Lorenzo during a Hasbro event, ComingSoon learned that Paramount Pictures was eyeing a release date within the Summer of 2014 for a fourth Transformers film. Whether it's a reboot or a continuation of the previous trilogy is still an unknown, but it sounds like it's a mix of things. Di Bonaventura explained, "we're going to try to do a hybrid there where there will be some characters that come forward--we think, we're still in the process of figuring it out--and some characters that don't, but it will definitely be a different story."
Does that mean new bots and new humans for them to deal with? Possibly. Following the release of Dark of the Moon, Shia LaBeouf revealed that he was done with the franchise and had no interest in returning. With the actor out of the picture, that leaves a lot of room for Bay and crew to renew the franchise.
Di Bonaventura suggested that the fourth film may go in the direction that the studios' other high profile comic book/toy movie, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, went down. With Retaliation, the studio has made some major changes to the film franchise in response to fan criticism.
With that in mind, what would you like to see changed in the next Transformers movie?
