This weekend, comic book writer Mark Waid revealed to Newsarama that both of his ongoing creator-owned books for Boom! Studios - Irredeemable and Incorruptible - would be coming to an end May 2012.
Waid explained that the decision came after evaluating his current workload and that a natural end can be expected for both books, ensuring fans will be satisfied. "I’m just stretched thin right now both personally and professionally, and I live in mortal fear that I’m going to overstay my welcome on these books. Moreover, I feel that Max Damage’s character arc is reaching its end in Incorruptible. And in Irredeemable, I’ve long known what the end of that series is, and lately, it’s as if all the characters are moving into position for it whether I want them to or not. So let’s go out big and grand," he said.
Irredeemable explored the idea of the what would happen if the world's greatest savior was the world's greatest destroyer? It followed the powerful superhero-turned-supervillain, the Plutonian, for nearly 30 issues. Incorruptible was a spin-off from the series, focusing on the supervillain, Max Damage, as he decides to become a superhero in the wake of the destruction caused by the Plutonian.
The final arc of Irredeemable will be from issue #34 to 37, in which Waid promises will be a surprise for readers. Someone thought lost forever returns to recruit the Plutonian into helping save the Earth from the plague. What follows will change everything.
In Incorruptible's last arc (#27-30), Max must stop citywide anarchy as the radiation plague from Irredeemable is unleashed throughout America and the people of Coalville are at the center of it.
As for whether or not Waid would return to the world he created in the future, he says, "Time will tell. Honestly, there are other stories that could be told with some of them — not all, as you'll soon see. First, let's see how fans react to the big finale."
