While Rocksteady Studios was hard at work raising the bar for comic book video games with Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, their publisher, WB Games, was working behind the scenes planning a major Batman title that would have explored a different side of the Dark Knight.
This is something we learned this weekend, when visual artist Julie Farrell shared some artwork that she was commissioned to do for developer Day 1 Studios and WB Games. Supposedly, the game would have based on the DC Comics Elseworlds graphic novel, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight. Unfortunately, it was canned early on. Well, at least we have the artwork to look at...
The 1989 Gotham By Gaslight centered on an alternate reality Bruce Wayne stalking the infamous Jack the Ripper in a turn of the century Gotham City. The one-shot/graphic novel was written by Brian Augustyn (Crimson) with artwork from Mike Mignola (Hellboy) with inks from P. Craig Russell.
