As a part one, it's more of a tease than a beginning, but it's interesting enough that readers will want to see where it's going.
-
Where every other title has gone for a mission statement as its opening issue, “Astonishing X-Men” simply offers more of the same. Even if that’s the point, it would have been nice to see it said with a little more confidence.
-
Because I've enjoyed Pak on so many other Marvel comics, I'm willing to give him some leeway in telling this story. But for now, McKone's art is still the best reason to check out this book.
-
Pak's plot is pretty light in this issue, but he supplements that with loads of action – more than we got in Wolverine and the X-Men #1 and Uncanny X-Men #1 combined – and great character work across the board.
-
This is a big name title, coming out of a huge reboot. They needed to hit the ground running a bit more than this.
